My art is a reflection of a relationship between seer and seen. I find the world amazingly beautiful, demanding attention, asking to be noticed. Through the act of painting I am able to focus my attention on a subject. In the time it takes to follow the curve of an outline, find the space between objects, track bits of light, reflected color in shadows, I begin to understand the magic in what I see. When I engage with the world as an active observer, I recognize the sacred that infuses the ordinary.
Corner gardens, city parks, lakes, open prairies, old growth forests, desert canyons, wandering streams, imposing mountains, turbulent rivers, deep oceans, places where the wild ones roam, hidden caverns … all of these sacred spaces feed my soul, make my heart sing and inspire my art. Although I’ve worked in many different media, pastel has seduced me with the delight of pure pigment, brilliant color and endless possibilities.
